Life balance can be precarious and feel elusive as we strive to integrate our work and personal life as we manage or minimize stress and seek meaning and fulfillment. If we seek balance, the scale will forever tip as our priorities shift, so perhaps we must strive instead to blend our personal and professional priorities with caring for ourselves while prioritising our well-being.
A client attending my group coaching session on work-life balance cited “No” as something to think about when considering balance. Realize that “No.” is a complete sentence. I often ask my coaching clients: What do you have to let go of (or say “No” to) to attract more? Saying “No” is boundary-setting, and when we assert our boundaries, we are taking care of ourselves.
Applying essential self-care for greater work-life balance and blend involves taking care of our spiritual, emotional, physical, and social health and includes being mindful and mindfully present, allowing ourselves rest and recovery, engaging in personal development, managing our time, and maintaining our connections and support systems.
Here are some questions to consider:
- What behaviours and actions cause imbalance and complicate your life?
- How can you structure your professional and personal life to avoid burnout, improve physical and emotional well-being, improve the quality of your relationships, create ‘me time,’ and make room for personal development?
- What can you declutter from the various areas of your life?
- How can you uncover those unnecessary tasks, responsibilities, habits, thoughts, and behaviours causing you stress? Analyze what these are costing you (in time, energy, money).
- What plan can you make to streamline your life and create ‘white space’ on your agenda?
- If you cannot have balance, how might you instead blend your priorities?
